Will-o’-the-Wisp are remotely related to the Fire Sprites and are completely harmless. They are di-ethereal creature, maintaining an ethereal presence in both the Earthen and Elvin realms. In our realm, they occasionally shelter in silken egg sacks left by spiders. When active, they appear as floating orbs, glowing with a bluish green light with a flickering intensity,Usually seen only at night, they appear to float in the midst of dark marshes and swamps, or follow in a traveler’s footsteps, but will withdraw if approached. Scientific scholars disagree on an Earthen realm explanation, concluding that these are pockets of spontaneously ignited swamp gas, or lightning bugs or bioluminescent fungi.
In 1370, Nicolas Flamel discovered that, if the normally explosive distilled essence of a Will-o’-the-Wisp is contained in the Chalice of Faenor and ignited with fire from the fire sprites, it burns slowly in two places. One flame appears in this realm and another in the Elvin realm, thus revealing the hidden pathways between the two realms. Hew Draper is believed to have used this process when he crossed into the Elvin realm to steal the Aelorithi Anlase, a sacred knife from the House of Aelorithi needed to give the Eye of Souls immortality.
